Personal Development that works for you

I wrote a blog a couple of weeks ago called “Why I don’t set goals anymore”.  This is something I feel very passionate about.

Why?

Well as you know I love Personal Development.  This blog is about that topic and how it can make a difference in your life.  The challenge is I think sometimes Personal Development, or the application of it, don’t actually help. I think it can hold us back.

You have probably read as many personal development books as I have.  For a list of my favourites click here Top 10 Personal Development Books.
They are fantastic and I have learnt so much from them.  But do you know the problem?  There is so much information to take in that it is difficult to apply all of it.  You don’t know what method to use, what thing to do, how to apply it.

Each Guru says something different (well the principals are the same just the application), they each have their own way of teaching and that causes a problem.  It is a problem because you as the reader don’t know what method to use.

If you are like me you find it easy to try many things quickly.  This is a great skill to have in business as I don’t worry too much when something doesn’t work I just keep trying to get other things to work until they do.  It is also a bad skill to have.  Especially in life.

I am the type of guy who reads a book and tries what the author says.  Then the next day I watch a youtube video of a Personal Development of Self help guru and try that.  Then I listen to a CD and try what is said on that.

You see the problem?  Information overload.

What actually happens is I learn a bit about each method but never really master any of them.  I also find that most Personal Development books, CD etc are really detailed.  They go into the “How” a lot and you have to learn a lot for it to work.

The real problem here is that if you are the same then you never really find anything that works for you.

So what should we do?

Well my suggestion is this.  You know in your heart what works for you.  If you don’t then try something for a week at a time and then choose the one you found you liked.

Then just do it! (Yes Nike you can have credit for that!).

Just get on with it and don’t worry about any new method you watch on youtube.  Changing all the time just holds you back.

Once I started to do this I realised how much I had been holding back.

See how this changes your life.

Matt
