This must be a question I am asked most frequently.  “How do I set a goal?”  People always want to know how, when I was in the lowest part of my life, could I even think about setting a goal.  How do you clear your mind so that you can set a goal?

Well that really is a great question.  Infact the ability to set a goal is probably the “golden nugget” of what it takes to achieve what you want in life.  No activity can start (or shouldn’t start!) until you have set a goal and know where you are going.

If you can imagine for a minute, a ship in a harbor.  The Captain has taken his position on the bridge, he has run all his checks and his crew is busy making ready. He calls down to the engine room and tells them to get ready because he is going to go full steam ahead.  The ropes are released and he pushes the levers forward full steam ahead!!!

The problem?  He hasn’t plotted a course!  So what happens?  Well in this example he hasn’t plotted a course so they run right across the harbor and into the harbor wall!

I see this a lot.  People have all the energy and will power to make things happen but they don’t have any destination so just run into a big wall.  Or they end up going around and around in the harbor burning up energy!

On the other hand some people seem to put little effort into things and cruise right on out the harbor…..they have a destination!

So let’s go back to the Captain on his ship.  Let’s imagine he did plot a course out of the harbor and he cleared the wall.  Now he is sailing out into the sea….but….where now?  He only planned to get passed his first challenge, he didn’t think what might happen passed that!

OK, so I think we have the imagine of the Captain and the ship now….lets look at how we get past this and out into the open sea and towards our goal.

Magic Little Goal Tip – Stage 1

If you have read any books around goal setting then you will already probably have noticed that there are tons of ways to set goals.  Everyone seems to have a unique way to do it and it can become incredibly confusing to know what to do.  So here is the Magic Goal Tip that will help you.  If you follow this tip I promise it will work…..I have used it and shown in to loads of people who all says it works for them.  So here we go….it so simple!

1. Get a small note book and put it beside your bed.

2. On day one (before you go to bed) write down your top 10 goals you would like to achieve.

3. In the morning open up the book, on a new page write down the top 10 goals again.  The KEY here is to NOT LOOK at what you wrote the night before.  Don’t be tempted!!!!

4. On day two, before you go to bed, open the book on a new page and do the same.  Write down the top 10 goals you would like to achieve.

5. TRY TRY TRY not to look at the other pages as you do this.

If your list changes everyday that’s fine.  In fact that is the idea.  This process helps you work out exactly what you want, what you REALLY want.  This is a simple process but has a very powerful results.  In most cases within ten days you will see that your list doesn’t change.  Once you see this once you see that your list is the same everyday then you move on to the next stage.

Stage 2

Now you have the top ten things you can move to stage 2.  For each goal you have, write one at the top of a new page.  So you will now have ten pages, each with one goal written at the top.  Over the next ten days every night just before you go to bed write down one line on each page that explains how you are going to achieve that goal.  The key here is not to go into loads of detail, just put something simple down.  Here is an example: -

Goal 1 – I want to get fit and loose10LBS

1. Eat better

By the 3rd day it may look like this: -

Goal 1 – I want to get fit and loose 10LBS

1. Eat better

2. Work out 3 times a week

3. Join a gym

Once you have 10 lines for each goal then you will have your action plan and goals that you actually REALLY want to achieve.  I know this might look simple and you might be thinking “Err, would this really work for me?”.  Well I can let you know that it has work for hundreds of people who have now achieved their goals and is working for people who are making their goals happen!

Give it a go….worst case is a few minutes of your time that helps you workout your goals.  I do know that if you follow this step by step then you will have an action plan to achieve the REAL goals you want.  So go for it….
