If you have read my blog for some time then you know I am a Vegan and Animal lover. I have always loved animals since I was a kid and I thank my Mum and Dad for that. They allowed us to have pets since I can remember.

We had all sorts of animals. A dog (Rupert) A cat (Tinkie), another cat (Tiddlywinks), Guinea Pigs, Hampsters, Tropical Frogs, An Iguana (Iggy) another dog (Esta) and I think that was it! Quite the little team.

I have to admit as I was growing up I wasn’t always completely in love with all the animals I had. You are too focused at doing your own thing to realise what looking after an animal is all about. But as I got older I really started to see each animal as a being with a soul.

Now I don’t even like killing flies or spiders. Why? If I can help them get our of the house I will.

For me is it much more than just standing up for the rights of animals (which I do) it is about realising that they are living beings and I am connected to them in so many more ways than I might know.

You can call it karma or whatever you like.

For me I know that in this world we are all connected by an invisible force that binds us. For any film fans, it’s much like The Matrix in the film called that. Neo realises that we are all connected by a field. He see’s binary but I think it’s a field of consciousness.

Do I think we are actually physically connected? Yes absolutely. It has been proven that we are all touching each other. The molecules in the air. Think about it. You might think that air is nothing, but it’s not. How can you ‘feel’ someone when they are close to you?

When you are cruel or violent to an animal you are disporting your pattern in the field. It gets noted. Same if you do something like that to another human.

You can connected to them and as such when you are cruel to them it comes back to you. Maybe not now, maybe not next year but it will.

But there is also more to it than that. It’s about a mindset. Learning to be compassionate with animals is learning to be compassionate with friends, family and strangers. We don’t have the right to use anyone and that is how it should be with animals also.

When you learn to look after an animal, and I mean truly learn to give it what it needs and see it as a living being with it’s own rights you learn to have compassion. Compassion leads to understanding. Love can then come.

When we begin to love we can being to live.

I think all children should learn to look after animals. It gives them responsibility and teaches them that their actions can affect others. Don’t feed the dog, it dies. Treat the dog nicely, it will love you. Simple right?

We yes and no. I think the problem is that we think letting children see animals caged up is ‘learning’. What is that teaching any kid? That it’s ok to caged something up against it’s desire? Don’t be silly…

I get a lot of comments on this blog saying I always give a fair and balanced view of discussions. Well on this I can’t. Caging an animal and letting kids ‘learn’ about it is not learning.

Let kids learn about animals in their natural habitat.

I am not against all zoo’s. Some do great conservation work and provide proper natural habitat for animals, but most do not.

Take Sea World in San Diego for example. They do some great conservation work but they also keep Killer whales in tiny little tanks. We all know of the poor trainers that have been harmed or killed by these whales. They simply should not be kept in tanks so we can enjoy them.

Wouldn’t it be better to show kids how these beautiful animals live in their natural habitat? Take them on tours, show them videos etc. I remember I had to do a presentation on Emperor penguins. I learnt more about them doing the research and reading than I ever did seeing them at a Zoo.

Before Zoo’s people could read about animals and it created an interest like no other. Now kids go to Zoo’s see animals and think “That was fun, what next?”.

Don’t try and justify any of this. I know some of you reading this will think I am taking a hard line and I am. But what about those kids that don’t have the chance to see animals like this? So what? The animal does’t live in a city so why not get the kid to learn why. Think about the interest and imagination this would create.

It’s not just me that feels the same way. People through the ages have believed this also. Here are just some.

“People often say that humans have always eaten animals, as if this is a justification for continuing the practice. According to this logic, we should not try to prevent people from murdering other people, since this has also been done since the earliest of times”—Isaac Bashevis Singer

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated…I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by [people] from the cruelty of [human kind]“—Mahatma Gandhi

“Life is as dear to the mute creature as it is to a man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not to die, so do other creatures.”——His Holiness The Dalai Lama

“Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.”—Albert Einstein

“Our task must be to free ourselves— by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.”—Albert Einstein

“Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.”—Thomas A. Edison

“It is just like man’s vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions.”— Mark Twain

“A man of my spiritual intensity does not eat corpses.”—George Bernard Shaw

“Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is—whether its victim is human or animal —we cannot expect things to be much better in this world. We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing we set back the progress of humanity.”—Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

“The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men.”—Alice Walker

The question is not, “Can they reason?” nor, “Can they talk?” but rather, “Can they suffer?” ~Jeremy Bentham

Hunting is not a sport. In a sport, both sides should know they’re in the game. ~Paul Rodriguez

“If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.”—Sir Paul McCartney

Those who wish to pet and baby wild animals “love” them. But those who respect their natures and wish to let them live normal lives, love them more. ~Edwin Way Teale

When a man wants to murder a tiger he calls it sport; when the tiger wants to murder him he calls it ferocity. ~George Bernard Shaw

So if you want to teach compassion, learn to look after animals!

I read this article today and thought about what this guys was saying. At first I thought, “Yes I totally agree with you, Stepehen Hawking is wrong”. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/belief/2011/may/17/stephen-hawking-heaven

Then I thought a bit more about what I really feel and what Stephen Hawking is saying.

And I am sure Stephen Hawkins is 100% right.

If you have not read the story yet Hawkins has recently been quoted as saying there is no Heaven. He has scientifically proven it. Apparently.

Now I have to say I have not read Hawking’s latest book nor do I know the exact details of what Michael Wenham was reffering to but I always see these comments from Hawking and thought it was time I should reply.

So here is why I think Michael Wenham is wrong.

He is wrong because he thinks Hawkins is wrong. Hawking is not wrong. How can anyone be wrong about what life has after death?

That’s that person’s beliefs and what they believe will be the actual thing they see. Let me explain.

In a great book by Deepak Chopra - Life After Death he explains that there is some common things that happen when you die and then then there are some things that happen based on your thoughts and feelings and beliefs. It is a personal experience.

Many people feel “the light” and then they go into a place where they are just there peaceful. In this place they often make a decision to go back into the world.

It’s a well written about thing and I urge you to check out near death or death experiences.

The point is if Stephen Hawking believes there is no Heaven then that’s great for him. If you believe there is then there is.

I do think it is a little presumptuous of Mr Hawkin to believe he has this figured out. He is using a method (Science) that is based on our knowledge to date. He says he has worked many things out but really he is just discovering new things and ways of looking at world we live in.

How can we possible be so confident that we know this or that right now? I mean think about it. We are only in our infancy (so we think) so we probably have no idea what we are going to know in the future.

I am grateful for people like Mr Hawking’s and Mr Wenham. They keep the discussion of life going.

So after all that do I really disagree with Mr Wenham?

Matt

As a big time animal lover and activist (yes I said it!) I still find it amazing that companies use animals to test on.

This will not be a rant about animal testing but the truth is that there more scientific ways to do it now. Actually a lot of the scientific community have come out and said that animal testing is NOT accurate at all. It’s old, costly and crap.

So here are some companies that still do test on animals. If you have a pet or love animals then I ask you to not buy from these companies.

Many manufacturers of personal care and household items still test their products on animals, despite the growing number of alternative methods for evaluating product safety. The following list contains all such companies known and their associated brand names. This list originally was compiled from two primary references (cited at the bottom of this page). In addition, it is updated as new information is made available to us. We cannot fully guarantee its accuracy, so please use the list accordingly–and do let us know if you can offer any further updates. You may wish to print out the list and take it along next time you go shopping! Please also note that all over-the-counter medicines and/or their ingredients are extensively tested on animals, as currently required by the FDA.
