Personal Development – What is that?

Although I think the the answer is probably very subjective and open to interpretation I will do my best to give you an answer that I think is accurate.  It will, if anything, be my interpretation.

I have been thinking about this for a while.  “Just what is Personal Development?”.  I mean what does it actually do for you?  We could look at that question and give a relatively simply answer: –

“Personal Development is any process, teaching or experience that improves us in many ways.  Ultimately creating a better person”  or as Wikipedia states: –

Personal development for individuals refers to actions oriented towards one or more of the following aims:

  • improving self awareness
  • improving self knowledge
  • building or renewing identity
  • developing strengths or talents
  • identifying or improving potential
  • building employ ability or human capital
  • enhancing lifestyle or the quality of life
  • realizing dreams
  • Fulfilling aspirations

But there in is the challenge.  How can we quantify what ‘improves’ means.  Or looking at Wikipedia how can we be certain that is the full list of what encompasses Personal Development?

I am not so sure we can, just like we can try to ‘explain’ what Love is but really we all have different answers to that.  We know how it feels and we THINK we feel about like others do but really we can never really know.

You might have read this before – “Success is the progressive realisation of a worthy dream”.  That might be a good place to start when looking at Personal Development.  Earl Nightingale is considered the “Father” of all personal development.

He created an audio track on Vinyl called “The Strangest Secret”.  If you have not heard this I RECOMMEND you get a copy!  It is excellent.  That was the first ever recorded Personal Development message.  It was a huge hit and changed the lives of millions of people.

Earl talked mainly about achieving more in life.  About getting ahead in an world full of opportunities.

And I think that might be where the answer is.

Perhaps Personal Development can be accepted as anything that helps you in life.  It could be a book about selling, a CD on relationships or even a meeting with someone who makes you feel empowered.  Whatever gets you to move towards your goals.

Perhaps even it’s a book that helps you set goals!

There is also an excellent book called the Magic of Thinking Big by Dr David Schwartz. You can see my view of that book here.

So is there an a way we can define this?  Most likely but I think to do that would confine Personal Development and that’s exactly what it is trying to help us avoid.

Personal Development as an object is focused on helping us expand and realise our goals and dreams.

If you are reading this it would be good to get some thoughts.  What do you think?

Danyl Johnson Xfactor – Got the Success mindset!

I know this is probably more familiar to those in the UK but I wanted to write a short note about Danyl Johnson’s performance on the XFactor.  (XFactor is like American Idol!).

Aside from the fact he did a great performance what set him apart in the audition is that he implemented the success mechanism.  He might not have know that is what he was doing but it is clear to me he was!

What do I mean by that?  Well Danyl might never have read a Personal Development book, he may not even know what Personal Development is but in those few short minutes he applied what most of us struggle to apply for years.

He used visualisation.

Once the audition was going he didn’t think too much about being at the audition he just thought about doing a great performance like he WILL do when he is a big star.  You can see it on his face, he was in HIS moment and loving it. He may well have been nervous but you can see once he got going he was the Star that he believes he is.

I don’t mean he was ACTING the part, not at all. In fact acting the part wouldn’t have worked in such a pressure situation.  He was BEING the part.  He was being the star.

I think there is a great lesson in this.  If you can just let go and be what you know you can be then you will achieve anything you want.  You don’t need to act that part….just be it!

Take a look at the performance and see what you think.

Steps to Success

Hi,

So you might have read my other post about “How not to be Successful”? Well that was just a bit of fun but it had a powerful message in it.  Really I was just trying to reach people in a different way.

Based on that post I thougt I should do a more serious (not too serious!) post about what it takes to be successful.  There is a proven formula and all you have to do is know what it is and follow it.  I will create a more comprehensive post but this should get you going.

This is not some tip on how to run a business or what stocks to look at.  If you have read Robert Kiyosaki Rich Dad Poor Dad then you may have been a little disapointed that he doesn’t give you a “quick fix” on how to generate wealth.  He gave you much more!  He gave you a formula on how to be successful in any element of life you care to put some effort into.  He gave you the key to the process.  That is what this post is about, the process.

So this is a process I have learnt from reading books for years, attending hours of seminars, listening to podcasts, watching videos, talking to my mentors and learning on my way!

You need a Goal/Dream

This is the most important part!  You must know what your goal or dream is.  Without this you won’t achieve anything.  If you don’t have one yet….go out and get one!

Write that goal or dream down

So now you have the goal you need to write it down.  I have a notebook that has my goals in it.  I look at this to remind myself.  I have done this so often now that I know EXACTLY what I want.  You should know exactly what you want.

Create a to do list of what you need to do

Now you have that goal you need to work on what has to be done to get it!  Don’t wait just begin.

Find someone who has achieved what you want

There is nothing more motivating than being around someone who has what you want.  It makes it real and you may even find they are willing to give you some help.  You will be surprised how open people are if you tell them they have achieved what you want.  In fact they will probably be more than happy to spend some time with you.  Obviously be polite and ask if they are willing to meet with you before you try and have a meeting!

Start to do the work

Ahh the work!  Now we have the goal, the to do list, perhaps even met someone who has what you want.  Now we need to get to it and start working.  I should probably say at this point that this is where most of us make a mistake.  We tend to think too much about this rather than actually doing the work.  It’s something I know I have done and it stops you getting your goals and dreams.

Keep your eye on the dream not the work!

It is really important to keep your eye on the dream and not the work.  How do you do this?  Well let’s say your dream is to own a certain car.  Every week or so go into the showroom and sit in the car.  Ask the salespeople and they will most likely let you take pictures with you in it.  If you are really nice you might get a drive!

Whatever the dream keep looking at it, touching it, dreaming it.  If you just want more time in your life take some time out and imagine what it would be like when you do have time.

Check your progress

I see this a lot in people who are achieving great things but feel like they are not doing enough.  Why?  They are not checking their progress.  It is really key to look back at what your goals were and how much of them you have achieved.

You can even reward yourself.  If you don’t do this then subconsciously you will not want to achieve your goals.

As I said this is not a detailed post on the process but a good start.  Look out for the the more detailed posts soon.

Go for it!  What would you do if you couldn’t fail?  Work that out and go for it!

How Not to be Successful or “Why am I not successful?”

So I have been thinking a lot recently about success and what it tales to be successful.  You will probably know that there is loads of information out there about how to be succesful.

Almost any author in the personal development or self help industry has written about this.  You can pick up some great information from these and I would suggest getting your hands on as many books as you can!  That is, if you are looking to be successful.

Do Mind Movies Really work?

Well!

Since I did that video on Mind Movies it seems this is something lots of you are keen to talk about!

With all the interest I thought it would be a good idea to write in more detail about How and Why Mind Movies work.  So lets start with the basics of what a MindMovie is.

What is a Mind Movie?

A Mind Movie is a movie you make on your computer that is about your best day.  It might have images that inspire you or images that reflect what you want to be or get.  You can add inspiring music or songs that bring out happy memories.

Take a look on Youtube for some great examples.  Essentially it is a short movie of what you want in life.

The idea is to play this movie everyday so that these images and sounds go into your brain.  Why would this help?!?!

Well it goes back to the Law of Attraction and also how we influence our subconscious.  Some call this the Auto Success mechanism.  If you have read Psycho Cybernetics then you will be familiar with that term.

Auto Success Mechanism

What a Mind Movie does is actually get your auto success mechanism working.  If you have read The Secret then this is similar to the Law of Attraction.  Once you start to act and BELIEVE the things in your Mindmovie then they will start to happenmind.

If you want more money then more money will come to you.  If you want to own a big house then you will find a way (or a way will come to you) to own that big house.  You get the picture.

I have set goals so many times and then struggled to look at my lists and keep focused that I ended up not setting goals anymore.  It became a real challenge to just set a goal becuase I knew in the back of my mind I would stop focusing on it! (I don’t have this

challenge anymore if you were curious)

And that’s why Mindmovies are so great.  They are an easy way to help yourself remember what your REAL goals/dreams are.  All you have to do

is watch the movie everyday.

So how do you create a MindMovie?

Great question!  You can make a MindMovie using your computer.  If you have a Windows PC then Windows Movie Maker is a good tool and if you use a MAC then iMovie is great. OR, you can get some help from the experts! Take a look at what Ryan Higgins and his company do click here.  They will help you create a MindMovie that is awesome!

So I hope that helps explain what Mindmovies are and how key they are to your life.  It would be great to get some views on your own MindMovies.  Leave a comment and a link to your MindMovie.
